If the chameleonic Beck’s junk-drawer pop aesthetic always hits you hardest when he’s at his most quiet (Mutations, Sea Change) rather than his most wild or far-reaching (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Midnite Vultures), well, his new record may be just what you’re looking for. The new album, Morning Phase, is due out on Valentine’s Day and harkens back to the somber gentleness of his more acoustic-laden albums. How do we know this? The album is currently available for pre-order, and Beck’s website notes that it marks “the beginning of yet another amazing chapter in Beck’s peerless career and catalogue. Featuring musicians who have backed him on many of his most acclaimed albums, as well as the current live shows widely hailed as the best of his career (Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner), Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of Beck’s most classic ballads, all the while surging forward with undeniable optimism.”
Having not heard the whole thing, we can vouch for all of that hyperbole, but hey, if it’s anything like the now-classic Sea Change, we’re certainly in.
